The One Question That Steve Jobs Asked Himself Every Day

Steve Jobs whom most of us know as one of the founders of Apple with iron-willed discipline and impeccable work ethic, looked in the mirror every day of his working life and asked himself one question, “If today were the last day of your life, would you want to be doing what you’re doing?” While his answer may be a clear “yes” for most of the days, that might not be true for the rest of us. Despite suffering from pancreatic cancer, Jobs worked right up to the day before he passed away due to his burning passion for his work.

“Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.” –Steve Jobs.

We ought to take a moment every day of our life and practice the habit that Jobs did. By asking yourself the similar question, you are able to determine the purpose of your life. If today were the last day of your life, would you be satisfied with all the things that you have done so far? Are you happy in the company that you are working currently? Does your life reflect what you want? If the answer is no, then perhaps you should start changing your life for the better.

Here are three questions that Steve Jobs’ morning routine can challenge us to ask ourselves as well.

1.  Are You Satisfied With Your Current Job?
It is undeniable that perfect job simply does not exist in this world. All of us have to endure the long working hours, tolerate with grumpy or lazy colleagues or struggle with meeting deadlines. However, at the end of the day you should feel happy and fulfilling with all the works that you have completed before you left the working area. You believe that everything you do is worth it.

2. Do You Have Any Regret In Your Life?
If you were given a chance, what will you change in your life? Most people are filled with remorse over the things that they could have done but they did not do them due to the fear of failure. As a result, they are often upset with their lives and daydream about the things that they could be doing rather than facing the reality. Changes can be scary at times as they do not guarantee success but it is better to take a bet rather than spending your whole life wondering about the outcomes.

3. Is Your Work Taking Over Your Life?
Do you find your job a rewarding and fulfilling part of your life or it has taken so much of your time that it consumes your life? While we cannot change the fact that most of our careers are nine to five, but that does not mean that your work should take over your life. As the saying goes, “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”. You have to be able to manage your work-life balance and spend some time doing things you like, be it spending time with your family or even head outside to jog.
